Two LA Councilmembers say proposed redistricting map disenfranchises voters

California News Times

Los Angeles (KABC)-Every 10 years after the census, the Los Angeles Subdivision Commission proposes to change the city map of Los Angeles.

However, their single proposal after the 2020 census has two councilors, Paul Crecorian and Nisia Raman, who are at risk of being furious and losing the area they are currently serving. ..

“That map is ridiculous. It deprives 500,000 people in those two districts, and under these maps, only 10% of those 500,000 people were by someone they had the opportunity to vote for. It will be represented, “said Crecorian.

Crecorian represents Council District 2 of the San Fernando Valley. Only 10 months old, Raman represents Council District 4, including Los Feriz, part of Koreatown, Hollywood Hills and Sherman Oaks.

If the LA City Council approves the new map, the Raman and Crecorian districts will be redesigned, one of which represents a completely different area.

“I spent almost two years telling the people of LA that their voice was important. Engaging in the city government could make a real difference,” Raman said last Tuesday. Tweeted to. “The actions of several unelected commissioners have now muted the voices of hundreds of thousands of Angelenos.”

Crecorian says the new map is not based on changes in population or demographics over the last decade.

“I think the result of them asking the public for comment is the result of transactions and politics. I don’t think it’s how this process works,” Crecorian said. “This process is open and transparent, and the general public should have the opportunity to comment on many different options.”

In a statement, Commission Chair Fred Ali said: It’s a rights law and other relevant data source, not about how to help or hurt elected civil servants. “

The Commission is holding a virtual meeting for public comments Wednesday night at 6 pm. If you would like to participate, please click here. https://bit.ly/LACCRCZoom
